Walter Jackson Owens entered Heaven’s gates on August 28, 2019 at the age of 80 years old. “Jack” left this world peacefully surrounded by his family in the comfort of his Edmond home. Jack was born to Elsie Purcell “Daddy Pete” and Daisy (Killam) Owens on September 21, 1938 in their family home in Coke County, Texas. With his boots, cowboy hat, and overalls, he learned to appreciate life in West Texas with his 1 brother and 2 sisters. Jack graduated from high school and juggled various jobs while attending Texas A&M. Though he pursued a military route before graduating, he remained a proud A&M Aggie for life. Jack served the country he loved in the Army for 9 years, and then for 21 years in the National Guard, achieving the rank of Command Sergeant Major. Throughout his years of service, Jack was deployed to Korea, Germany, Vietnam, and Kuwait.

What Jack loved more than his country was his family. He married the love of his life, Margaret “Ann” Martin, in 1958 and spent 61 years with her by his side. As a travel agent for many years, Jack and Ann enjoyed the perks of traveling themselves. Their favorite place was Hawaii and they loved to recall the festive luaus, fresh flowered leis, Hawaiian culture, and macadamia nuts! Jack and Ann raised their three children Sheryl, Lisa and Mark in Oklahoma City. He loved his job as their Dad and made sure he spent quality time with each of them, while instilling in them values that they now pass along to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who knew him as “Papa Jack.” One value was hard work, and he continued to dabble in various careers such as an insurance agent, and revenue recovery agent with UPS until his retirement. He served in his community as a Shriner and Mason, participated in the Rotary Club, and was a lifetime member of the Professional Businessmen’s Association. His bright green eyes may have been somewhat color-blind, but he was not blinded to the beauty of his life and the world around him. He lived his life with a grateful spirit for everything “his Maker” gave to him.
Jack Owens is preceded in death by his parents Elsie Purcell and Daisy Owens.
